Novel diagnostic pathways for prostate cancer risk assessment

Prostate cancer is common among UK men, but current check-up methods can miss harmful cancers or cause unnecessary worry. This study looks at a new testing pathway to see if it improves how doctors detect prostate cancer early. Men aged 45 to 74 having a prostate check can take part. Participants start with a standard PSA blood test. If needed, they will also have a specialised blood test called Stockholm3, which checks biological markers and genetic data to predict cancer risk. Those with higher risk may then be offered an MRI scan, and possibly a routine biopsy if the scan shows anything unusual. The study does not test any new drugs or treatments. Instead, it checks how well these tests work together in normal medical practice. By taking part, you could gain a clearer picture of your own prostate health while helping improve cancer checks for others.

על מה המחקר הזה?

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers found in men across the UK. Finding it early, before it causes symptoms or spreads, gives treatments the best chance of working well. However, the standard blood test used today—the prostate-specific antigen, or PSA test—is not always as accurate as doctors would like. It can sometimes miss serious cancers or cause false alarms for harmless changes in the prostate.

To help solve this problem, researchers are testing a joined-up approach. Alongside the standard PSA test, they are using an advanced test called the Stockholm3 blood test. Stockholm3 looks at several protein markers, genetic details, and personal health factors together. This helps doctors build a much clearer picture of someone's individual risk. If this test shows an increased risk, men are offered an MRI scan to take a detailed look at the prostate.

This study aims to find out whether combining these tests works well in everyday healthcare in England. By following around 10,000 men, the researchers hope to make prostate cancer checks far more accurate. In the future, this could help doctors spot serious cancers much sooner while sparing healthy men from stressful and invasive procedures like tissue biopsies.

נקודות עיקריות

  • Aims to make prostate cancer checks more reliable using advanced blood tests and MRI scans.
  • Open to men aged 45 to 74 who have never been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • Uses the specialised Stockholm3 test alongside standard PSA testing.
  • Involves no experimental drugs, tablets, or medical treatments.
  • Aims to reduce unnecessary biopsies while catching harmful cancers early.

מי עשוי להיות זכאי?

This study is open to men aged 45 to 74 who are already having their prostate health checked through the study clinic pathway. To join, you must be able to understand the study details and give your consent to take part.

You cannot join if you have ever been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the past. You are also not eligible if you cannot have an MRI scan (for example, if you have certain metal implants or severe claustrophobia) or if you have had a recent procedure on your urinary system, such as a biopsy, bladder camera check, or urinary catheter, in the last six weeks.

האם מחקר זה יכול להתאים לך?

ענה על השאלות המהירות הללו כדי לבדוק אם אתה עשוי להיות זכאי. זהו מדריך בלבד — צוות המחקר מקבל את ההחלטה הסופית.

  1. I am a man aged between 45 and 74.
  2. I have never had a diagnosis of prostate cancer.
  3. I can safely have an MRI scan (no incompatible metal implants or devices).
  4. I have not had a urinary procedure or catheter in the past 6 weeks.
  5. I am currently having my prostate checked through the study pathway.

מה כרוך בהשתתפות?

Taking part involves having your prostate health checked using a planned series of standard and advanced tests. First, you will give a blood sample for a regular PSA test. If your result meets certain criteria, you will have another blood test called Stockholm3. If that test also shows a higher risk, you may be invited for an MRI scan of your prostate. If the scan highlights any areas of concern, your doctor may suggest a routine biopsy through your regular NHS or private healthcare service. The study does not involve any experimental medications. Researchers simply collect and review your test results and health records over the study period, which runs from September 2026 to September 2029.

סיכונים ותועלות פוטנציאליים

Taking part may give you a clearer and more accurate assessment of your prostate health, which could help detect any serious cancer at an early, treatable stage. You will also be helping doctors improve testing for other men in the future. Because this study observes diagnostic tests rather than testing new drugs, the risks are low. Blood tests can cause mild bruising or temporary discomfort, and MRI scans can feel noisy or tight for some people. If a biopsy is needed later, your doctor will discuss its specific risks with you beforehand. Taking part is entirely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time without any change to your normal medical care.

שאלות נפוצות

Do I have to take any new medications in this trial?

No. This study only evaluates testing methods. It does not test any new medicines or experimental treatments.

What is the Stockholm3 test?

It is an advanced blood test that checks several protein markers, genetic details, and clinical facts to give a more accurate picture of prostate cancer risk than a PSA test alone.

Will I definitely need a prostate biopsy?

No. Most men will not need a biopsy. You will only be offered further checks, such as an MRI scan or biopsy, if your blood test results show a higher risk.

Where does the study take place?

The study is based in England, with recruitment taking place through the Nuffield Health Barbican Medical Centre in London.

Will taking part affect my normal NHS care?

No. Joining the study is completely voluntary and runs alongside your normal care. You can stop taking part at any time without your regular care being affected.
