Struggling with symptoms like irregular periods, stubborn weight gain, or unwanted hair growth? You could be dealing with PCOS. Our PCOS video series breaks down everything you need to know, from what polycystic ovary syndrome really is to its common symptoms, causes, and the latest treatment options.
Overview
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries work, often causing irregular periods, high levels of “male” hormones (like testosterone) and fluid-filled follicles on the ovaries that can prevent regular ovulation.
What is PCOS?
Symptoms
Symptoms of PCOS can vary, but common ones include irregular or missed periods, excess facial or body hair, acne, weight gain, thinning hair on the scalp, difficulty getting pregnant, and ovarian cysts.
Treatment
PCOS cannot be cured, but it can be effectively managed with treatments tailored to your symptoms and goals. This often includes lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and regular exercise, and hormone-regulating medications.
Fertility and PCOS
PCOS can significantly affect fertility because it often disrupts ovulation, which makes it harder to conceive. However, many people with PCOS can still get pregnant naturally or with the help of treatments like lifestyle changes, medication, or fertility support.
Diet and PCOS
A balanced diet rich in whole foods, fibre, lean protein, healthy fats, and low in refined carbs and sugars can help manage PCOS symptoms such as weight gain, irregular periods, and acne.
