Taking fibre supplements at the same time as apixaban might lower the amount of medicine your body absorbs. This could potentially make apixaban less effective at preventing blood clots.
Why this happens
Fibre supplements (like psyllium husk or methylcellulose) work by absorbing water and forming a gel-like substance in the gut. This bulk can trap medication molecules or speed up their passage through the digestive system, reducing the time the body has to absorb the drug into the bloodstream.
What you should do
To be safe, take your apixaban at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking a fibre supplement. This gap ensures the fibre does not interfere with the absorption of your medication. Do not stop taking your prescribed medication without speaking to your doctor or pharmacist.
Important precautions
Bleeding risk and surgery
You must tell your doctor or dentist you are taking apixaban before any surgery or dental procedure, as it may need to be stopped temporarily to prevent dangerous bleeding.
Drug absorption and timing
Fibre supplements can prevent other medicines from being absorbed properly. Take apixaban at least 2 hours before or after taking a fibre supplement to ensure your blood thinner remains effective.
Intestinal blockage
You must drink plenty of water (at least 200ml) with every dose of fibre. Without enough fluid, the supplement can swell and cause a blockage in your throat or intestine.
Food and drink warnings
Water and non-alcoholic fluids
You must drink plenty of water (at least 200ml per dose) when taking fibre supplements. If you do not drink enough fluid, the supplement can swell and cause a blockage in your throat or gut.
Alcohol
While there is no direct interaction between apixaban and alcohol, drinking heavily increases your risk of stomach bleeding and falls, which can be more dangerous while taking a blood thinner. It is best to stick to moderate drinking limits.

Can I take Flecainide and Wegovy together?
Wegovy (semaglutide) can slow down how quickly your stomach empties. This might change how your body absorbs flecainide, which is a medicine that needs to be kept at very specific levels in your blood to work safely and effectively. Additionally, both medications can occasionally affect your heart rhythm or heart rate.
