Severe stomach or bowel problems

Mounjaro can cause התייבשות חמורה due to vomiting and diarrhoea. If you have pre-existing stomach or bowel problems, such as gastroparesis, this medicine may worsen your condition. Ensure you maintain a high fluid intake to prevent kidney damage.

Stop using Mounjaro and seek immediate medical help if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain (which may radiate to your back), as this can be a sign of acute pancreatitis.

Severe kidney impairment or dehydration

If you develop severe vomiting, diarrhoea, or a high fever, you must stop taking Metformin temporarily. These conditions increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but life-threatening build-up of acid in the blood.

Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

Neither medicine is a substitute for insulin. They must not be used to treat Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, as they will not prevent these life-threatening conditions from developing.

General anaesthesia/surgery

You must inform your surgeon if you are taking these medicines; metformin usually needs to be stopped 48 hours before surgery, and Mounjaro may need to be paused due to risks of stomach emptying issues during anaesthesia.

Drinking alcohol while taking metformin can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. It can also increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and binge drinking.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while using Mounjaro. Both alcohol and Mounjaro can lower your blood sugar levels; combining them increases the risk of severe hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar).

Additionally, both can cause nausea and vomiting, which may lead to dehydration. Alcohol can also irritate the stomach, worsening the gastrointestinal side effects common with this medicine.

While not a direct drug interaction, eating large or very high-fat meals can significantly worsen the common side effects of Mounjaro, such as nausea, bloating, and indigestion, because the medicine slows down how quickly your stomach empties.
